Laura Clayborne is a successful journalist who makes decent amount of money. She is married to Doug who’s also doing well in his job. But their marriage is going through a bad patch. She feels that they are not that much into each other as they were when they had married. The only thing that gives her pleasure is the news that she’s going to be mother soon. David, her would be son, is going to be the one that she would live for and she’s happy because of it.

Mary Terrell aka Mary Terror was once a member of, Storm Front, a terrorist organization, that now is living a life of anonymity and filled with memories of her past. She hates the Mindfuck state who’s continuously poisoning the world and want’s to make her one of them. Her lonely existence comes to an end she gets to know that Storm front is reviving again. She now needs a baby and she’ll need anything to get it.

And so when Mary Terror manages to steal Laura’s baby, Laura realizes that the only way she can get the baby back is by going after her herself. The authorities have failed her and Laura can’t let some one destroy the only hope left in her life even though her opponent is on the list of wanted criminals of FBI. Would Laura be able to stand against Mary Terror? We’ll you’ll have to read the book for that.

Mine was the first book by Robert McCammon that i read. It was a thriller and entertaining. Mary terror is ruthless and one of the most dangerous antagonist among the ones that I’ve read. She’s delusional and has no qualms about who she’s killing. On the other hand the protagonist Laura has always lived a life of comfort. So her taking Mary Terror on makes the story compelling as i believed that Laura couldn’t beat Mary ever. The author has written a story in such a way that it makes the ending believable. The changes that occur in Laura’s character as the story progresses also feel realistic and made me feel that chances of her defeating Mary were improving.

The pace of the story was fast most of the time although in the middle it tended to slow down a bit. But this thing didn’t affect me much as i read it while commuting to work and on a single way journey i finish just 40 to 50 pages. So if one is planning to read it in  a single sitting then i think in some parts action will be slow which may change the way they view the whole novel. But if you’ll stick to the story then it would be worth it.

Personally, for me the book was a decent read and i enjoyed most of the book. Mary as a villain was outstanding and so was Laura. There are some parts of the book in which the amount of gore may make people squeamish. The scenes have been described very graphically. But if you can tackle it then you’ll enjoy the book.
