My name is Dirk Wallace: unmarried, pushing 40 years of age, tall, dark, with a face that, so far, doesn’t frighten the kiddies.
Mrs Thorsen believes her daughter Angie’s been getting blackmailed. She want to know who’s behind and wants it to stop. So, she engages Acme Detective Agency for this work.
Dirk Wallace is an operator for Acme Detective Agency. He and his assistant Bill Anderson are given this job of solving the case..
But soon Dirk realizes there is more to the case then simple blackmailing. He starts getting threats and then something happens which hits him badly.
Now he’s has vowed he’ll find the guys and will hit them where it hurts.
What did they do to him? Will Dirk be able to exact his vengeance or will he find out that he’s bitten more than he can chew?
Hit them where it hurts is an entertaining detective fiction by James Hadley Chase. I have always liked Mr Chase’s work. They are fast paced, thrilling and most importantly don’t have unnecessary descriptions. They are brief and to the point and thus the story lines are tight.
This novel by him has all the above qualities. It starts off as a detective novel and then becomes thriller as the protagonist of the book has vowed vengeance. There are surprise attacks, mafia, guns, bombs, femme fatales and i enjoyed reading every bit of it.
Dirk Wallace is a smart guy who takes no nonsense from any one. He and Bill Anderson make the dream team where he’s the brains and Bill the muscle. I think these two characters had the potential to have a series of their own. I don’t know whether Mr Chase wrote more books featuring them but i know it could have been written. I’ll look into it though. If you know that whether he wrote another novels featuring these characters then do tell me.
The only thing off that i found was that the last part of the novel seemed a little bit stretched.
If you are feeling like reading a fast paced thriller then you’ll not go wrong by choosing this. I really liked it and would definitely recommend it.
