In 1312 A D Malik Kafur, the most trusted general of Aauddin Khilji, Sultan of Delhi, had hidden a treasure of immense value.
It’s 1528 A D now and the treasure of Malik Kafur has become a fable. Now,Akbar,The Mughal emperor, is at the pinnacle of power . He has been consolidating and expanding his kingdom for the past twenty years. During this time he has accumulated not only power but also some powerful enemies. The rebellion is brewing among the other kings and it’s lead by the despotic king of Khandesh, Asaf Baig.
The only thing that’s needed now is money for the rebellious troops and Asaf Baig has stumbled upon the knowledge that whereabouts of the fabled treasure of Malik Kafur are known to an old Seer, Ambu.
Ambu meanwhile has a premonition about Asaf Baig’s intention and asks her grandson Dattatreya to march to Agra to meet the emperor and ask for his help.
What follows is the adventurous journey of Dattatrey which is filled with not only danger but where the simple naive Datta will be plunged n the midst of the politics and would have to become the man of the world to survive.
It was a delight to read the book. The book is a mixture of Historical fiction interspersed with the elements of fantasy. Datta and his family are called gaurdians who can talk telepathically to animals and these animals play an important part in the story. So when reading one has to consider this fact that although there are historical characters here but this is also a fantasy novel and you’ll enjoy it. It was the first novel by Aroon Raman that i read and i’ll be reading his The Shadow of Throne soon.
I loved the character of Dattatreya and how his character evolves as the story progresses from a simple village boy to a man who is adept at the military strategy. Then there are ‘Taraks’ the secret cult of people that possess superhuman strength and are known not only for their ruthlessness but their prowess to hunt their enemies. I loved them and they made one hell of a foe in the adventure. I also like the character of Ahilya Bai who is an independent woman and a competent shooter of arrows. The rest of the characters were fun and really complemented the story. I hope Aroon writes another novel in the similar genre and involving ‘Taraks’
I got the signed copy from the author and i’m really glad i got it. I have to confess that although it’s premise was interesting i would have given it a miss as my TBR pile has become so huge. But i’m glad that i got the book otherwise i would have missed such an entertaining read.
The treasure of Kafur is a perfect blend of historical fiction and adventure along with a dash of fantasy. It thus makes the perfectly entertaining read. I enjoyed every page of the book and would recommend it to every one.
If you are an historical fiction fan then you can read it but you’ll have to keep in mind that it has some fantasy elements that are very essential to the story. Anyways if you’ll read it, let me know how you felt about it.
Happy reading.
