Who will win in this battle of wits?
I had heard a lot of good things about the book and so i had huge expectations from it. I’m glad to say that it lived up to its hype..Initially, i was finding it hard to get the hang of all those Japanese names but as i progressed i could remember the names of major characters. I hope with more Japanese literature in my TBR(to be read) list i would become good at remembering Japanese names. But for now i would just say that ‘A devotion of suspect X’ is one of the best thrillers that i have read this year.
There is no mystery here as to how the crime takes place. The reader knows what happens and how it happens. But the plan that Ishigami executes to make sure the culprit gets scott free is something that was treat to read. Plus, there is Yukawa aka Detective Galileo who is called to solve the crime. The battle of wits between these two geniuses was something that made the read entertaining till the end. It was more fun because they were fighting for the opposite party but personally these two were friends who cared for each other. This made it an interesting concept.
By the end of the book i thought that i had figured out the plan but boy, how wrong i was. I definitely didn’t see that curve ball that the writer had thrown towards us.
The only thing that i didn’t like about the book was the decision that Yukawa takes in the end. I think it was something that he could have avoided as it didn’t do any good and caused pain to everybody involved. If i would have been in Yukawa’s place i would not have taken that decision.
In the end i would just say if you are into good thrillers then you should definitely check out this book. I enjoyed it till the end and i hope you would too. If you have read the book then do tell me how did you like it.
Some quotes from the book:
That’s what happens when you free people from the restraints of time. They make their own rigid schedule.
Your assumptions are your worst enemies. Trust them too much, and you’ll fail to see what’s right under your nose.
They certainty had no idea what they had done, but that was okay. Sometimes all you had to do was exist in order to be someone’s saviour.
