First Sentence:
Her novelty Batman clock – given to her by a long forgotten coworker from a long forgotten job – clicked passed two o’clock.

Story:

No matter what Leslie does she just can’t seem to finish her work. She tries very hard but the work is slowly engulfing her whole life. Her wife and her step son are being pushed away but she doesn’t seem to care. The work is important and it needs to be done. Everything else can wait.

And then something weird starts happening. She seems to have the all that time that she needs for her work. And she knows it’s because of her new laptop.

How’s Leslie able to find time? What was so special about the laptop?

My View:

R P MacBrennan’s horror novelette After hours deals with a subject that is faced by a lot employees nowadays. With the advancement of technology one has to be always on  and that seems to take a lot of chunk of their life. The work keeps on  piling and no matter how hard one tries it never ends. We are living in a world where everything needs to be done yesterday.

I have gone through what Leslie’s going through and i could feel the pressure that was being put on her. It is a horror novelette and there are moments in it which are scary but to be really frank, for me the most scary part of the story was the description of Leslie’s work life and how she was willing to take the mounting pressure. The system is created in such a way that it makes the exploited think that they are important and then they keep slogging till they burnout and another person is ready to take their position.

The supernatural element was just icing on the cake. Although, i could guess what the angle would be but i wanted to know how the story would end. It not only creeped me out and  kept me hooked till the end. Here i would just say that from now onward i would look at my inbox a little bit differently.

I also liked the way the relationship between Leslie and Vanessa has been portrayed. That’s how the partnership should be. Sometimes we need our loved ones as they are the only one who can, by being strong and persistent, save us from ourselves.

In conclusion, i would just say that R P MacBrennan’s After Hours is not only a great commentary on our present working conditions but it also beautifully portrays the importance of our families, which we often take for granted. I enjoyed reading it.  If you haven’t read it then do give it a try.
