Review:
The Lies of Locke Lamora is a fantasy novel by Scott Lynch. It is the first novel of Gentleman Bastard series. Camorr is the city that has only two jobs for orphans either they are sold as slaves to work in mines or they come under the tutelage of the Thiefmaker and work as a sneak thief.
When six year old Locke Lamora is brought by Thiefmaker he has no idea what he has led himself into. Soon enough he realizes that Locke Lamora can be a danger not only to him but also to his organization due to his temperament. He tries to control him but when he fails in doing so he’s left with only two options ie either to kill him or to sell him to the Eyeless Priest. What would happen to Locke Lamora? Will he be killed or the Eyeless Priest would be able to train him??
How will his life turn out to be??
Read the book to find out.
It was an amazing read. It’s essentially is an adventures of a gang of con-men who con the rich people. Locke Lamora is not your average hero. He doesn’t minds stealing, his physically weak but has an excellent brain which hatches very clever schemes that are not only dangerous but also theatrical which makes it fun to read.
The book has a two story lines that progress side by side. One tells the story of present time where Locke is heading The Gentleman Bastards, he’s has successfully swindled many nobles out of their money and has by his act earned a title of Thorn of Camorr. While the other stories provide the back drop for the way the current gang of Gentlemen Bastards was formed and how the eyeless priest taught them and how they acquired there skills and developed their friendship. Initially i liked the later story line as it dealt with history of th gang and how they passed their childhood. But the as the story of the present Camorr progresses it began to capture my interest.
My only qualm was that we don’t get to see the other successful swindles of Locke Lamora that made him The thorne of Camorr except the present one. Also, its shown that Lamora is head over heels in love with a woman but that she’s gone somewhere. What happened between them and what’s the story of the girl?? I wish the author explains it in the next book.
The dialogues were witty and gentlemen bastards are cheeky all the time. I would definitely reading the next part of the series. If you like fantasy and you like an unconventional hero or i should say anti-hero you’ll love reading the yarns of Locke Lamora.
Some quotes from the book:
“Bug,” Calo said, “Locke is our brother and our love for him knows no bounds. But the four most fatal words in the Therin language are ‘Locke would appreciate it.'”
“Rivalled only by ‘Locke taught me a new trick,'” added Galo.
“The only person who gets away with Locke Lamora games …”
“… is Locke …”
“… because we think the gods are saving him up for a really big death. Something with knives and hot irons …”
“… and fifty thousand cheering spectators.”
whores, and your mother. Since your mother’s dead, I’ve taken her
place. Hence, I’m bullshit-proof.”
for Chains’ inspection. “It’s all wrong. You couldn’t kill anyone with
this.”
