First Sentence:
There had been an emergency at the hospital at that night.

Anupama was her like name ‘uncomparable’ in her beauty. When Dr Anand sees her for the first time, he falls head over heels for her. But their marital bliss doesn’t last long when white patches begin appearing on Anupama’s body. When she finds out she has Vitiligo, her world shatters into pieces. Her in-laws ,who didn’t care for earlier and were  opposed to the marriage because of Anupama’s financially poor background, force her to return to her father’s home. Here, seeing the social stigma faced by her family and hearing constant barbs of her step-mother due to her condition she begins contemplating suicide. But Anupama has never been weak and she decides that she’ll leave the place and will carve her own destiny. She goes to Bombay and there finds a life which is full of success and devoid of that social persecution that she had to face due to her condition. How will her life turn out there? What will happen to her and Anand’s relationship?

Mahashweta is a simple but powerful tale. It highlights the plight of people suffering from Vitiligo and how they are ostracized from the society.  Anupama thinks that her life is finished when she finds about the condition. She is distraught when her husband who professed to love her till eternity refuses to communicate with her. There comes a time when she contemplates killing herself but then she fights with the situation and comes back a winner. That fighting spirit is what makes Anupama an inspiration. She faces constant battle but never looses hope. It’s due to her tireless  toil that she achieves success in a city where no body knew her. She eventually comes out victorious and independent. Although, she ended up becoming wary of relationships and that was kind of sad to see.

In the end I would say that i  really liked the book. The story is simple but gives a powerful message. It portrays what the people suffering from Vitiligo have to endure. I think you should read it too.
